「太平記英勇伝」は国芳が50代前半の時の代表作の一つで、主に弘化4年～嘉永3年（1847年～1850年）に版行された人気の武者絵シリーズです。大判で全50図なのですが、その他に、版行されなかった版下絵（「岩成主税亮祐道」オランダ国立民族学博物館所蔵）1図のみが知られています。

南北朝時代の「太平記」の名を借りながら、むしろ「太閤記」など、織田信長と豊臣秀吉の波乱の時代をテーマにした揃い物です。それらは、一人一人の武将の勇ましい姿を描いたポートレートに、戯作者・柳下亭種員による略伝を添えた構図になっています。

その数々の名作には、国芳の才能あふれる描写だけではなく、江戸の彫師と摺師のレベルの高さに大いに驚かされます。

"Taiheiki Eyuden" is one of Kuniyoshi's representative works and was published in his early 50s, mainly between 1847 and 1850. The series consists in a set of 50 large-sized warrior prints, but there is also one unpublished sketch ("Iwanari Chikaranosuke Sukemichi"), owned by the Dutch National Museum of Ethnology.

While borrowing the name of the "Taiheiki", the famous story of the Nanbokucho (Northern and Southern Courts) period, it is rather a series of prints portraying warriors of the turbulent era of Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, like the stories of the "Taikôki", and is composed of portraits depicting the valiant appearance of each military commander, accompanied by a brief biography by the playwright Ryûkatei Tanekazu.

In these masterpieces, not only Kuniyoshi's talented depictions are amazing, but also the high level of the carvers and printers of Edo.
